Tim Tovell was commissioned to build the Queensland National Bank’s Jandowae branch in late 1913. He had previously built a number of solid structures around the town, some of which still stand today. We met with Tim’s granddaughter Sally in August 2018, and she kindly provided permission for the photographs in her collection to be reproduced on this site. Whilst she was here we spoke about the possible location of the Tovell home. The photograph of Tim with Nancy in the garden shows a building on the far right of the photograph. Comparing with other photos we believe this is the school master’s house which was erected sometime around 1912-1913.
The orientation of the school master’s house as well as the Tovell home places the Tovell home somewhere around the present site of Jandowae Motor and Tractor on Market Street, not quite on the very corner of George Street. That said, the early map of Jandowae which we can date by another property to being originally drafted sometime around 1907-1911 shows Tim holding a parcel of land bordered on all sides by George, Jimbour, Coxen and Prior Streets. We will attempt to identify the correct location and advise in future. We will endeavour to add a more comprehensive biography for Tim soon.

Note the property owned by Tim Tovell in the lower right corner of the below map which has been dated by known dates of ownership of another property at sometime between 1907-1911. Tim’s brother Ed had his property just a block away.
